How do I repack a radiator isolation valve

1st,are you sure it's leaking?
the packing nut is the uppermost nut [above the bonnet encircling the stem] on the valve body; and should unscrew without much trouble.i would use an open end wrench of the correct size to avoid deforming it-perhaps with a few radial taps from a "persuader" to get it unstuck.
i suggest if it is very old to use the same graphite string packing it always had.remove as much of the old packing as you can, and wind new in clockwise.removing the handle makes it much easier.
finally replace the packing nut, compressing the packing while turning against the threads to get it started; and then tighten until you can feel turning resitance on the stem.--nbc

    Repacking valve.

I don't know much about the valve except it looks to be a 1" angle globe valve. It looks like there is is a bonnet and I need to get the old packing material out, but I don't want to torque it off if I'm going to destroy the valve. Any idea's?
