Controlling a back up boiler

We are using a gas boiler to back up a wood fired boiler. The wood fired boiler mfr. recommends just using a second thermostat set lower than the main thermostat.
Because there are several zones I am considering a system that would measure the water temp from the wood fired boiler and if it was below a set temperature would allow the gas boiler to fire at the next call for heat.
The gas boiler would remain on until the need for heat was satisfied even if the temp in the wood boiler lines came up to temp.
Once the need for heat to the zone was satisfied the system would return to using the wood boiler unless its water temp was low at the next call for heat.
Is there a better way to do this?
