automatic air vent instalation

Is it typical if you have a headroom problem to install the automatic vent on tubing of same connection size.
It seems that due to the capillary action and surface tension air cannot be promoted to the device.
If there is a different way to install with out the restrictive means?

I once had
almost the same problem. 1-1/4 CU ell buried in a wall. Air locked hot water system. Manuel air Is the only way to do it. I drilled a 1/4 in hole on the pipe below the ell where it was accessable pushed in a 1/4 in copper tube into the top of the ell. Places a small valve on the tube and walla vented it nicely. only have had to venr it seldom. brazed the tube into the hole0
