Solar Chiller
www.robur.com click on the American flag to go to the US site. I've been after them for a while to incorprate solar to the gas absorption chillers. Same technology but gas fired. I have to assume there must be a need for a backup water heater for non sunny days?

A friend of mine
who works for a distributer was telling me they are looking into providing a line of solar chillers by Yazaki out of Texas. Apparently Santa Clara University used one in their Decathalon house. I checked their web site and most of their product line is commercial, but they do have a residential that is listed at 2 to 5 tons of capacity. I imagine the variance would be due to the temperature of the water provided. The operating temperature range is from 158 to 200. Has any one seen any other products of this sort coming down the line? I wonder how much they would cost? WW

Absorption Chillers
I have talked to a distributor of these Yazaki chillers. Some rough information he gave me was that a 5-ton unit would take approximately 20 Apricus 30-tube collectors. Cost is somewhere in the $60k range right now for the package. Their target market is commercial installations where the tax incentives are much better.0 -
Yes,
I seem to recall the Robur people saying something about takes too much hot water to be practical. BUT I SAY, how about we just use it to supplement a bit? Like a little preheat action of the refrigerant going into the generator? Couldn't hurt. One of those back burner ideas tossing around in my little head.0 -
China mfg
Broad Chillers out of China makes some down to 4.5 TONS. It is a nice package unit with a Riello burner and Wilo pumps inside. We have quoted some, but I think energy is to cheap yet. We are in the North, so less A/C needed. Maybe down South the numbers would work. The smallest 4.5 TON unit is arount $18,000.00.
