My wife picked up the Yes Relayer CD for me yesterday. I've owned the Album since it came out in '74, but haven't listened to it in years.

This is one of my favorite Yes albums. Though it might not be everyone's cup of tea, I find it very technical in the musical sense, very intricate guitar work and very well engineered, though the mix might have been a little better in a couple of spots. . Cranked up with head phones is the best.

Carbon Leaf

I'm listening to Carbon Leaf's Ether-Electrified Porch Music and Echo Echo CDs. It's a rootsy acoustic-electric heavy Celtic rock type of thing, out of Richmond, VA . . . spectacular jazz-like drumming and heavy bass lines combined with great acoustic guitar work and tin whistle. It's kind of like Dave Matthews and REM with an attitude meet the Chieftans. Very Cool.

Yesterday, it was "The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place" by Explosions in the Sky . . . Kind of like Pink Floyd would sound if they were from Seattle.

Yes is cool too. I'm a guitar player and I'd give my right arm to play like Steve Howe . . . wait . . . That wouldn't work very well . . .

I never tried a turntable with a built-in CD recorder. I did tie my old turntable and stereo receiver into my computer sound card, and digitized maybe 100 LP's from my collection using a $10 shareware program called CDWave, before burning them to CDs. The results were more than adequate. Skunky '70s rock just doesn't sound the same without the crackle.

The reason that Relayer surfaced is that I heard Gates Of Delerium on the radio the other day. That has to be a first, at least for me. Granted, it was not what you'd call a mainstream station.

Let me know when you hear about the concert. I was thinking of going to the show on LI, but scheduling got in the way.

Jack, I have a USB turntable. We plug it directly into our laptop. Does a nice job.

The CD player in the car holds Frank Zappa recorded (VERY crudely, I might add) at Saarbruken Germany in 1978.

Lead song....Dancin' Fool, and a ton of mid 70's classics.

I find the version of St. Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast particularly righteous, although a bit tinny sounding.

Paul, I listened to Relayer and side one of Yessongs just the other day! Killer albums, saw the tour in 74? Also listened to GTR Live and Dream Theater - Images and Words. If you are on the fence with Dream Theater, get Images and Words and crank it. Best man for man talented group working today!

November 13th, the original drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience died on Oregon. Anybody that could keep up with Hendrix and understood his vision must be recognized as a true legend of music history. Just listen to him rip it up in "Fire" and "Crosstown Traffic"

Freak: Squire has always been number one on my bass player list (besides me, of course . That's a Rickenbacker, same one he's been playing since the mid 60's.

Bella Fleck and the Flecktones which was preceded by Stevie Rays version of Texas Flood. I hear alot of opinions on great guitar players. Am I the only one who sees the greatness in SRV? I LOVE that guys work. It seems so effortless.

From what I remember reading, SRV never considered himself to be a great guitar player, never felt it came naturally. He really had to work at it. Sure sounds great to me.

And Bela? Caught the Flectones with Mr Milne a few months back opening for Return to Forever, and I'll see them again in Fairfield CT on December 12th. That's a talented group!

I have Sirius in the van but XM from satellite for the TV so the only time I could listen to Willie's Place was at home before leaving for work. Pleasant surprise yesterday when the receiver did a station upgrade and there was Willie. Yippee.

Is a MONSTER on albums and live. Saw Yes at least 5 times in 70's-80's. Relayer might have been my favorite tour. Saw the Tales tour at Cornell front row. When you see them live you think that there can't be anybody better on the planet. I wore out Yessongs on vinyl. Siberian Khatru probably my favorite Yes song. Close To The Edge second...

I completely agree. The only time I saw them was the relayer tour in 76(?). It was outdoors and I was far from the front. I almost went to see them in LI this year, but no could do. I hope Anderson gets better and tours again.

I saw Alvin Lee at the Cubby Bear Lounge across from Wrigley Field a few years back. He WAS the band so anything less is well,...less.

Really dating myself here but when I was young like a freshman in high school I saw them and I think it was their farewell tour. All the roadies came out at the end, turned their backs and their shirts read "**** Y** to the crowd. Apparently the "Space in Time" album didn't fit well with the flying fingers approach Alvin Lee had with previous Ten Years After lp's and the fans reacted negatively. It was all good to me and still is.

Isn't it obvious. It's right there! And if you don't know I'm not going to tell you :):)

The CD of Relayer that I have has a studio cut of Gates on it. it's obvious this may be an early run through of the song as it's not quite set up the same as the final cut. Anderson's lyrics are partially the same as the finished product. I get the feeling that with Yes the music is developed first, then the lyrics are developed to possibly make sense, but more to fit the song. In essence, the voice as another instrument. Most music I believe is wrtten the other way around.

The words to Sound Chaser from Relayer seem to fit this premis: Faster moment spent spread tales of change with in the sound. Counting forms through rhythm electric freedom Moves to counter balance stars expound our conscience All to know and see the look in your eyes.

I've had Sirius since Howard started

Howard in the morning and rock & blues the rest of the day. Could not live without it now. Now more annoying commercial breaks. Signal doesn't fade, never lose reception ever! Best $12 value ever. I drive all over New England, it simply rules. You can even listen on your computer. Only weakness is they don't have a progressive rock channel. But right now they have a 24 hour channels for Springsteen, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. Sirius RULES!!!

They're older albums were a bit more understandable. I was just listening to Southside of the Sky from Fragile. Definitely more understandable. Maybe with time they just twist the lyrics more and more until they barely make sense.
