Single pipe water level

One of those songs....

Anyway, if the water level bounces, it may mean a dirty boiler, clogged returns, inadequate or obstructed equalizer... any number of things. Adding water will not help but will postpone a high water level condition.

I would start with a skimming of the boiler, lots of patience there. If you can open up the returns, an end plug or low valve and flush them out or look inside, that is the second thing I would do.

There are other measures, but these are where I would start.

    Single pipe water level

    hi all.

When the system is calling for heat, where should the water level in the sight glass be? Mine is bouncing around at the very bottom of the glass.
Should I add more water to the system? But when the system is cooled, the water level goes back into the halfway mark, so adding more water might be too much.

    help, im stumped!
    Thanks.

    1/3 from bottom

That is where level should be unless boiler is marked different.

Your boiler water is surging. Water needs to be skimmed or near boiler piping is different then manufactures requirements.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    thanks brad and ed.

So just to confirm, on the call for heat the water level should be at the bottom and once cooled, the water should be back to halfway?

just wanted to make sure i understood you.
