Skimming - DOES ANYONE KNOW AN ALTERNATIVE TO TSP?

DOES ANYONE KNOW AN ALTERNATIVE TO TSP?

We are going to try skimming the boiler again. However, TSP is not sold in NY, since it's supposedly illegal due to the effects of phosphates on the environment. DOES ANYONE KNOW AN ALTERNATIVE TO TSP? There is a TSP 90 substitute, but we can't find if that's safe for boilers. We tried skimming without chemicals but none of the minimal oily-looking stuff in the gauge glass came out the skim tap. We know everyone says don't add chemicals, but the manufacturer is saying chemicals might be necessary to force the oils to the top.

    TSP

I use a product called 8-Way that appears to work very well in cleaning up a dirty boiler after skimming. Leave the water purple in the glass and it turns green as the water conditions deteriorate. Kind of like liquid litmus paper. Works very well and safe on the gasketed boilers.

  • Thanks Al

I looked around and found the product info on it. It'd made by Rector Seal

The color indicator looks like a nice feature.
  • boiler cleaner

for boiler cleaning and skimming, peerless recommends arm&hammer washing soda [4 lbs. for 1,000,000 btu. 2 boxes]
then use the fancy and pricey chemicals.-nbc

    Washing soda

I used the washing soda in my last install the way Peerless suggested. I skimmed it with plain hot water the way I was taught first till it was all clear then put the washing soda in and heated the boiler up. I never saw such crud come out of a boiler before. In my opnion it works.

    Bonjour from Paris.

    TSP

If you insist on TSP check with your paint stores. Many painter still use it to prep for painting.

dirty steam boiler blow down water and water in vents

    Thanks for weighing in fellas.

We could only find "super" washing soda by arm hammer, but only to be shipped on the net, can't find it locally. We will try that first and then hopefully will be good.

Does anyone thinks we should use the 8 way afterwards just for good measure, or just to stop after the super soda if the dirty water goes away.

It was never cleaned apparently after the install at the end of last season. The plumber said it skimmed clean and the gauge glass was clean so he did not want to add chemicals, but now the blow down is filthy like coffee after sitting all summer, even though we drained and re=filled at the beginning of this season.
