I had a bad board for priority two. I left the DHW on PRiority one, turned off priority two and made the heat call on priority three. Everything worked sweet.
I just to busy to get back there and change the board, not that I should have to. MAybe on next years service it will get changed.
Ahhhh one problem down, many more to follow.

Ultra promlems?
Has anyone run across any problems with the new generation of the WM Ultra?
I'm a wholersaler in the midwest and I have a fellow salesman on the Iowa border that has sold 3 of the new Ultra's so far and all three of them he said there was the same control problem. He didn't go into detail other than saying that it was the same problem on each of the boilers.
Just looking for some feed back.0 -
newUltra
Just put one in and had a little trouble, but not with the unit, just lack of knowledge and training on the new control. A huge improvement over the old model.
YOu do have to program it correctly to assign each pump when to run and not to run depending on the call. Also, you must use the sizing chart in the new boiler manual to size your DHW pump. Do not use the chart in the tank manual. They are looking for a lower temp drop thru the boiler and the job we were on called for a 0010 in the tank manual but the job required a 0012.
Just make sure to read the manual completely, use tech support, and get your rep to schedule some training

In my area,
W/M was KING, but that was long ago.
They are being overgrown by the competition who offers, first of all call backs to dealers with a problem, and secondly knowledgeable people up front & on the road who can diagnose faults pertaining to any of their products.
To me W/M hasn`t done this for years,, HUGE sales loss to them.
Of course, I expect Al to differ with me.

bump putting an ultra 105 in friday
Just a bump to see if i'm going to have any hidden issues.
I don't like the idea of us having to be their beta testers for a new board. This will make the customer very unhappy, because i recommended the boiler based on past installs of series 1's and 2's and the permitted sidewall venting with a snorkel.
Please let me know if you have any other info- to make my life a little easier.
thanks

Then, there is ....
THE "RAY" (Mestek Ray 200i)!!!0 -
I just fired off anUltra 80 series 3
today. It was the quietest boiler I have installed to date. It also had easy programing so-far.
JIM0 -
did a 230 sires three
got caught off guard with pump size change on DHW and older computer board. Rep came right out put the new board in that also helped correct the pump issue. Always had good luck with WM tech and support.

New WM
I just had a new WM Ultra installed and there was a problem with the relay/ boiler controls. The DHW kept faulting and went into a "soft lockout mode." (I know, I am one of those crazy homeowners who actually reads the whole install manuel) My man Dave at SLIFE, the best in NE Ohio, and the WM rep. came out and fixed the contol. They used a new RIB.
It has been problem free since.0 -
yeah, w-m tech services
helped us diagnose a problem with a month old series 3, bad board, so we replaced the board. same problem. thanks w-m. we now have an unhappy lawyer for a customer0 -
How is it piped has a rep seen the install
the one thing with Ultras is they are "very" flow sensitive the new ones even more so. What state are you in the two best people to deal with are Steve Stults at factory support and Geary Stacy the technical field rep. I had a pump size by the old charts (all I had at the time) and it caused a soft lock out. When changing from 3 to 4 on the software you still have to change the peramitors. If your piping or pumping is wrong at all you can have lock out. I have been dealing with these guys for many years and they have never ever left me hanging.

flow sensitive
yeah, i'll say. what state am i in? a state of irritation; va. i didn't speak directly with tech svcs, so i don't know names, but i'll jot those down for future reference. thanks.
the long and short of it; after w-m saying that it might be a flow problem, i figured it out by simple trial and error buy adjusting the flo-checks. but now the upstairs is 78degs with the stat off. yippie! a gravity baseboard system
and a piping example that the manual didn't make clear; pipe sizes 1-3" are acceptable, but 2 isn't recommended. huh?0 -
can you make a sketch of your piping
include boiler pipe and pump sizes along with spacing of tees and location of flow checks. Do you lock out on a call for domestic. Unfortunately I have to re check this site for updates since invision has no interest in correcting the auto notification issue I have with this site. My direct E mail if you want is consolidatedph@comcast.net.

thanks mitch
no, there's no domestic. just heating. and i don't know when i'll get back there, but i'll take a pic when i do and send it to you. i didn't do the piping, but i've inherited a portion of the headache. a fun headache of sorts but........0 -
dhw lockout
installed a 105 today, was working fine until we tested dhw while a call for heat was present. Control showed a changeover to pump 1 dhw, but never energized the pump or torned purple. Only way to get dhw with heat on was to turn the switch off and back on, then it went into DHW mode. With heat off the control worked fine.
Local rep wasn't sure over the phone, is coming out Mon. Customer is po-ed because i recommended it over their sugggestion an Alpine.
had to hook up a temp elec hwh for the weekend.
Sometimes i wish i just installed series 2's............0 -
urrrghhhh!
don't ya just hate it? we'd went with the 3 because some of the guys had just attended the w-m seminar on it. the one and only ed sem i'd missed in 5yrs. phew!0 -
I have installed the first of each series
they all had there growing pains always best to get the last of the sires before it changes. On the other side we have had issues with less complicated boilers just look at all the leaking Burnham boilers we are pulling. A bunch of steam boilers less than ten years old.
Your problem is most likely fixable, the one thing I do with all my ultras of the first few of a series is run the type of installation and settings with factory support.
Series two did have an issue with sensors failing the new ones have double sensors.
I think once you get it up and running you will like it.

The series 3 that
I just installed would not change the secreen to purple during DHW mode and it just needed me to program the right perameters in the boiler.

parameters
Thanks Jim, It was getting late and I was getting aggrivated. went through the pararmeter settings. Keeping all the defaults.. I've put series 1's and 2's with no problems yet knock on wood.... all been in a few years now. what gets me is the blue screen changes- under pump, it changes from circ to dhw pump as the aquastat clicks, it just that the boiler continues to keep the primary pump on and keep the temp curve going, and once you shut it off and back even w/ a call for heat the screen turns purple and it energizes the dhw.
i'll keep you posted.
Thanks,
Mike0 -

What did you end up changing on your unit.

Boiler Software Issues
This may be a side note, but we installed a Slantfin Bobcat with indirect in August. Once heating season started the boiler would not switch to dhw if there was a call for heat. It did not matter whether I programed it for priority or not. Slfin sent me a new board (next day) which works mostly. They have a setting for timed priority for dhw. That setting does not switch with a call for heat, however the setting for priority with no time limit works fine. Factory guys say you don't really need a timed limit for dhw priority!?! Strangly this is the same company that offers the option for using a thermister sensor (12k) on the indirect, but they don't make one.
We went from using Munchkins, to Ultra's, with just this one Bobcat install due to height issues. So far I'm most happy with the Ultra's. Hope there are no suprises coming. We are installing a 310 this week!

Thanks, we are going back in the morning and i'll check the max time limit for dhw, and turn it off completely.0 -
stopped by the job
I stopped by the house today because i was suppose to be somewhere else monday; and turned the max time limits off. It still did the same thing. Indirect calls for heat, but pump won't come on until the heat thermostat shuts off. I'll see what tommorow brings.0 -
i do remember
reading something in the install manual about the default for dhw, but i can't remember the pages0 -
Weil
You're right about the disagreement. I have installed over 300 Weil Mclain boilers in the last 13 years and I have NEVER had an issue with lack of support or technical info. I hear a lot of guys complain but seldom to I here: "maybe it's me and my attitude", but they have been great with me. I have the MA and MI phone # in my cell phone and the company President's card in my file. Sure, some reps are more sales oriented and some are technically better, but using them as support and not sounding boards for your problems will usually get you the answers you need...in a hurry. I do admit I would like to see more training B4 a new product hits the market, but Weil isn't alone in that department. Still my choice for the best boiler made in the USA.

No Wonder;
That's nearly a full course textbook on how to complicate things. I'm glad I have the rAy. So simple, efficient, reliable, and sophisticated. Primary/Secondary, fagetaboutit. Not necessary. Aluminum HX-NOT, Cast Iron, Baby (Lifetime Warranty).

lifetime warranty Ray?
You might want to take a look at that Ray Warranty again its 10 years parts only, then prorated from retail prices for months 11-25+. Technically speaking I guess you could call it a lifetime warranty. I dont think I would want to see the labor bill to change a heat exchanger on the Ray boiler. Unless they changed something I havnt read.
Sorry to hear about the new Weil Mclain troubles, hope they get it worked out quick, at least you were able to get it patched up for now. Good advice for any others having a similar problem.0
