New boiler odor! Help!

I had a new gas steam heat boiler installed yesterday. The odor throughout my home is like heating oil everywhere! AHHHH! My wife is freaking out! Is the smell coming from the radiator steam or from the new boiler or both. Should the boiler be drained and filled several times?

  • It's probably

oil and grease from cutting and threading pipe. The boiler needs to be flushed and skimmed.

It's oil gassing off the outside of the pipes. It will last a few days and be gone.

I also experienced "That New Boiler Smell".
    It disappeared fairly quickly.

    Always a little

Oil smell on start up from the residue from machining and threading. Give it some time and you will notice improvement. Hopefully you have enough fresh air for combustion(not an issue with sealed combustion units)Have seen many heat sources with in adequate make-up air.

    Not unusual

I've had new boilers set off smoke alarms.

BUT, that should go away rather quickly. If it persists, contact the installing company.

    I had a new steam pipe installed . . .

under my floor to correct a pitch problem, and had a similar odor the first few times that the boiler ran during the start of the heating season. The smell has abated noticeably since then.

    No inside the boiler

Oil will float on the top of the boiler water. The oil needs to be skimmed off the surface.
