    You can also...

..... buy new ? You know the deal if you need one you can't find one and if you have no interest you trip over them ....I thinks it's Gods way to keep us humble ..

    used radiators

Radiators were mfg, by American Standard and marked "National Art Radiator". Circa 1940. Thin-tube type. Most are 5 tube, maybe a few 6 tube. Ray.

  • New?

I recently priced out a 6-Tube, 25" tall, 16 section Burnham Slenderized radiator for my house. My friend in the heating business was willing to sell it to me at his wholesale cost . . . just under $900.

It sure makes the prospect of reconditioning an old one worthwhile. Instead of putting the low unit under the window, I found a 38" tall used one one of about the same EDR, sandblasted and painted, turned the valve around, and installed it next to the window. I know it's not optimal, but it saved me about $700.

    Did you say....

    .... Friend ?

  • Yes, but Burnham is apparently not my friend.

Yes, a friend, sort-of. We do a lot of business together where I work, mostly on the sheet metal fabrication side of his business, but somewhat with process heating/cooling stuff. The price he quoted me was legitimately his price from the local wholesaler, with his discount. I bought a tiny radiator directly from the same wholesaler last year, paid list, and it was equally ridiculous in price. Maybe truck shipping plays a big part in the price.

Anyway, this year I actually bought 2 rads from different plumbers I know, both old 38" high American/Peerless 3 column units. One plumber I know through a board we both serve on in church had a seven section unit leftover from a long completed job, sandblasted and primed, that he sold me for $100. A different guy I deal with at work had a six section one in his outdoor scrap pile, really rusty. He said to just take it, but I gave him $50 for it, just to avoid any accusations of conflict of interest. That one cost me $112 just to get sandblasted, but it still was a lot cheaper than a new one. Both are installed, working, and looking almost like they did new.

Before I found the rads I bought, I did advertise on Craigs List and got a few responses . . . but nothing in a size I could use. I guess it was worth a try.

I see them all the time on eBay for $50 to $100 too . . . mostly on the East Coast, pickup only. Since I'm in the Midwest, that's no good for me, but the Long Island crowd might be in luck.

I DO have a 6 tube Slenderized radiator in my garage that matches Tim's specifications exactly. Tim, it's yours for free if you don't mind a trip to Wisconsin, and don't mind that it has a big ol' scab of J-B Weld covering a crack. I'm sure Tim isn't interested, so next spring I'm going to try to pry it apart, do a dye penetrant check on the crack, and try to weld it up permanently. (Wish me luck!)
