Why Ditch Gravity?

Folks spend a lot of effort blocking gravity flow in small pipes with flow checks and loops. But in a house with big pipes and an old gravity flow system, adding a pump (the smaller the better) is recommended on the and assumption that gravity flow would be unreliable. Is this contradictory?
Our gravity system was converted (for a time) and first pumped with a 0011 then dropped to an 0010 (both caused a lot of flow noises). But in a 1928 house that has been tightened considerably, why wouldn't gravity flow in the over-sized CI radiation and piping be adequate? Why pump and invite balancing troubles that require addition of TRVs?
If constant circ is the ideal, why can't gravity systems be saved?
