Hello walies. I have customer who has 20 Kw of PV pannels and is in the process of building a new home. Aprox 4500 Sq Ft. he want to be green, the price point for geothermal scared him away from that this house is going to go with a in-floor heating system and a yet to be determind cooling system. this is to be built in Boulder county Colorado under there green built system. we are trying to achive a heers rating of 10 for this propertie. my question is do any of you have experiance with the few modulating electric boilers that are out there. Thanks for any input Mars.

    Electric Heater

I'm not sure I follow. The price of geothermal scares him, but the price of 20kW of PV doesn't? I don't understand how buying large amounts of photovoltaics and running resistance heat is green or a good financial investment.

I am not familiar with Boulder County's green built system, but my standard recommendation would be that he should first super-insulate the home, which sounds like the plan. Then he should install a solar thermal heating system with appropriate backup, whether it be gas, LP, heat pump, or electric resistance. The key is keeping the heat load very low and utilizing as much passive solar heating as possible.

Yes, there is a cap on the tax credit for solar thermal and no cap on the credit for PV, but does that make 20kW of PV financially make more sense than a solar thermal heating system?

As far as electric heaters go, Laing's EPR heaters are excellent.

Why use a boiler instead just electric baseboards, or maybe even electric radiant using self limiting tracing product?
