What keeps the vermin out of a concentric's air intake?
You can opt for the SS vent termination kit offered by TT.
It accepts PVC and is screened all around.
In my case I used the chimney as a raceway(through roof), and a simple 4" intake vent in the wall.

Dave

What keep the vermin out of a concentric's air intake?
We're just getting ready to install a concentric vent for a new Prestige Solo 60 and have to wonder what keeps bugs and small creatures from making the trip in through the combustion air intake route. The bird screen protects the vent itself but the combustion air intake is screenless with a pretty wide opening. I can just picture small field mice finding it a pretty easy trip between the vent an air intake. It would be possible to install a bird screen down stream of the exterior vent but then it would be near impossible to get to this to check it and clean it if necesary.
Hate to see the mess mice would make inside the Prestige.

A concentric
cat?
:P0 -
eccentric cat
i have an eccentric cat & no mice of any flavor come near my house & live to tell about it !!0 -
All cats
are eccentric!
My Susan will tell you that no matter what happens out of the ordinary, how inconvenient (traffic, late trains, collateral mishaps, you name it), they all have one thing in common:
The Universe is run by cats. Bet on it.0 -
This works every time
Makes good BBQ also...0 -
Coaxial?
I'm a big fan of concentric (sometimes referred to a coaxial) vents. There is meaningful heat recovery possible from this type of vent.
I went to TT certification class and they told me they didn't offer such a vent option. Who manufactures the vent you are using and how does it tie into the separate intake and exhaust ports on the boiler?0 -

Are you referring to the SS termination kit?
If so, TT does offer them. Just mount the wall termination & run your PVC into it.

Threats from the wheel of death....
Actually, on a boiler I recently serviced, the burner was full of ground up and cooked moths and mud dobber bee's. So, you are correct, there is nothing there to keep the vermin at bay. I installed an in line air filter using a vacumm filter bag and two 3X4" no hub couplings.
I'm thinking every manufacturer SHOULD have an air filter somewhere on thier intake. Like it or not, the Blow Core did use to have one.

TT labels the vent and provideds a supplement to explain it
Scott,
That seems pretty strange since the box has a Triangle Tube label on it and there is a Triangle Tube supplement inserted in the box as well as one available online to describe its installation.

I still want to know how to keep the vermin out!

While concentric vent kits make for a more convenient installation, the jury is still out on this up here in Western Canada. The manufacturers of boilers with the Giannoni coil style heat exchangers tell us that in some locales, the Air currents on the outside of the building can cause the flue gases to recirculate back into the appliance! The net effect is nickel leaching out of the SS Heat Exchanger, creating brittleness and premature failure. The visible effect is the deposits on the heat exchanger that look like coffee grounds.(Buderus also preaches this). Try venting with two-pipe!0 -
That is a pvc coaxial vent termination. Thanks for clarifying the issue.
True coaxial venting is a thin wall polypropylene (I think) inner exhaust pipe inside of an aluminum 5'' diameter outer fresh air intake. This configuration allows additional heat transfer after the boiler HX.
There are some who feel that PVC is not a suitable long term venting material. (I remember some threads on this) Viessmann will only permit use of it's coaxial vent, CPVC, or AL-29. Given the stakes it's surprising that there is not more discussion about the suitability of PVC for this purpose, I guess it's not really clear what the long term stability of this material will be in higher temperature applications like this.0 -
Bill, I think the coffee grounds or crystallized mouse poop, is just a fact of life with propane. Still if Buderus is now recommending against the use of these vents I wish they would send out a bulletin to those who chose this option as presented in their literature!
Can you tell me where that information came from specifically, I'd like to know more about this.0
