Solar blending in

I like it! No way one can hide them but the installation is neat and true, good proportions. It says that the Owners are thoughtful about it yet it does not overpower the house like some stand-off array might.

That reminds me of the European panels I saw this past summer in Denmark -every house had one or two, just a matter of fact. Little cottages but nearly every one had at least one panel. Not unlike your install.

Yes, that is "brochure worthy" in my opinion!

    Solar Blending In

Do You think this solar system blends in with the looks of this house? Thinking about using this photo for adds. Do you think it takes away from the look of this house?
  • no blend

while I don't think it really blends in, it's nevertheless a very neat, clean install. if someone would object to the looks of that then no solar for them.

edit: you know, on a second look, unless you really look at it you don't really notice it.

    Nice

install and a clean pic to boot.

A horizontal mount up near the ridge may have blended a bit better.

The look is second to the primary goal.... a small piece of long lasting energy independence for that family.

    I like it as well.

I think it would be great for a company brochure. If only more people would embrace these systems. Everyone has a water heater, it is easy to help folks offset their fossil fuel usage. What kind of systems are you installing and how do you like them?

    blending in

To me-those panels blend in as well as anything. Sort of like a chimney. I think people will start to accept them more an more. I have a 120 tube array that had to be tilted up on the front of my house. Because of the oil problems this year I have had more comments on being the "way to go". Even my wife who is picky about "looks" finds them interesting. As an engineer I see the beauty in them and don't care what anyone thinks. I do like watching my hot water recharge for free everyday.

    system types

We are selling Heliodyne flat plate systems and Viessmann evacuated tubes. Since June we have done 16 Heliodyne systems ranging from 1 to three panel SDHW and one 14 panel heat and SDHW, and six evacuated tube systems, 5 thirty tube systems and one 20 tube.

    this enough

I do not see doing a lot of heating with solar, at least not until oil gets up to $8. Not too many existing homes are really good candidates. This 1980 home was built with passive solar and the roof at 60 degrees for active panels and hot air distribution, these are new Heliodyne panels that we installed to take the place of the panels that where damaged.

  • In Europe we tend to integrate the solar panels into the roof, so that they blend in better

    Hey Ron...

Nice looking job. I think people are willing to give up some aesthetics in order to incorporate solar, so long as it doesn't look like the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria crossing the horizon...

BTW, when I was coming home from Hydronicah in Heeney last Sunday, I passed a good looking pickup truck pulling a nice trailer from Ron Huber Construction on I-70 east bound.

    Was that you?

    Not me

But you may see me on I-90 heading for Livingston Mt.in the near future. Have land there and two daughters and grandchildren there, hope to build and relocate there in the next few years. Land looks over the Yellowstone river and the Rockies are a few miles away.

    pipe penetrations

For this setup, the Viessmann tubes feed and return on the same side, if you want to keep the pipes to a minimum it is hard to separate them and use a conventional boot. I have done this for a long time, drill a hole slightly larger than the pipes, fill in with silicone, top of with roof cement and make a mini pitch pocket, never had a leak this way. For flat plates systems we use "Coolie Caps", it is a copper flashing with pipe flange that seals the penetration and looks good, all you see is the pipe insulation flush with the roof, no ugly boot. The one we use for the top return pipe also has a copper gooseneck for the sensor wire to come out of. I will take a photo of one I have in my work truck tomorrow and will post it.

    Velux

Can't say I have first hand knowledge of them, but Velux also makes a collector like this. The collectors match their skylights.
