Recessed Rad

A couple of questions on Burnham recessed rads. 1. How much space is needed between the back of the radiator and the wall? 2. Any solutions for the air vent sticking out of the front? Thanks again

I have seen these fully recessed (flush with the wall), semi-recessed, (protruding about 1.5 inches) and fully exposed but for trip around the joint, so the choice is yours.
For recessed in an exterior wall, darn it makes you wish for 2x6 construction. Some, any insulation behind if you can get it. Rigid fiberglass board to me is the best but seal the edges with foil tape or insulators cement to block inter-fiber airflow.
As for the vents, I have seen them tapped on the side for steam as well as the front. Obviously the side vent was for semi-recessed and exposed. If fully recessed and the front face is what you have, Heat Timer Vari-Valves are pretty small and I think rather elegant.0 -
Brad,
Thank you for this response and to your response in my other post about painting rads. The vari-valve looks like a perfect solution.0
