Low Pressure Steam Boiler System---Bottom Drain Spigot Stuck

I have a Weil McLain low pressure steam system that I've kept in pretty good repair/shape. On a fairly regular basis I like to drain a bit of water from the bottom of the boiler using the copper spigot that's attached to the boiler (it looks very similar to an outdoor water spigot for a hose). Over time, I've had to tighten it tighter and tighter when turning it off to avoid dripping. At this point, it's tough to get it open to drain again. Can I repair this like I would an outdoor spigot, i.e. remove the packing nut and handle and replace the washer and copper screw??? Not sure. Can you help? My thanks.

The easiest way to repair that item is to replace it. Pretty cheap at the big box stores.

If you are handy, and have two wrenchs or large channel locks you can fix it. Your valve should be 3/4 , pick up a new ball type hose cock, shut down your boiler for 6 hours, then make a choice on weather to put the valve on the fly and get a little wet or drain down and replace. Good luck or just call a plumber.

    Drain Spigot Replacement---turn off pilot?

Thank you. I think I'll go the replacement route. Any cautions? The spigot screws directly into the boiler. When I drain to replace should I turn off the pilot light, or is it okay to leave it on?
