Honeywell Smart Recovery 'Stats

seems to be in your realm... :)
The "Smart Recovery" technology, as I understand it, uses "time to setpoint" to calculate an optimum start time in order to reach target temperature at the prescribed time.
Does it also in any way limit the depth of setback in conjunction with the time function in order to minimize the climb-time?
Thanks in advance,
Brad

Hi, Brad.
Adaptive Intelligent Recovery has been a feature of the trade programmable thermostats since the Chronotherm 3 programmables, introduced in the 1980's. It is still standard on the Vision Pro programmable, but not on the retail stats or the FocusPro non-programmables. It's a program that "remembers" the temperatures from the last three days, and calculates the latest possible start time to begin bringing the system out of setback. The old mechanical clock stats just took the system out of setback at a specific time. Adaptive Intelligent Recovery brings the temperature up in timed steps that will have it at the comfort temperature at the beginning of the "wake" or "return" period. Customers may hear the boiler or furnace firing a couple hours before the "wake" period starts, that's normal, the system is just ramping up to be at the comfort setpoint when the setback ends. The depth of the setback will effect the recovery, depending on your heatloss, a deep 15 or 20 degree setback may take a long while to recover from during a cold spell in a poorly insulated home.
This feature may be disabled in the installer setup program for the thermostat, but I do not recommend doing that. If the Adaptive Recovery is explained properly to the homeowner, they will understand why their heating equipment may begin to warm the house a couple hours in advance of the "wake" or "return" period. I hope I answered your question.0 -
Hi Bill!
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I think you confirmed my understanding that the technology will only work with the time variable and will not limit the depth of the setback.
I have a client who uses such a 'stat and loves it, but wanted to know if deepening the setback would save more energy yet allow a recovery using less overall energy. (His is an old, 1871 uninsulated bank building with better windows at least.)
Fun project and no where to go but up!

1 pipe steam in the old bank?
Or maybe one of those great pneumatic message tube systems with the fancy brass fixtures that many of those old banks had? I'll bet that vault door is something to see.0 -
Oil-Fired FHA, I am afraid...
The vault door is gone but the main room detail is something...
But the heating system? I wish it were steam! I am doing a blower door test this coming weekend, so interesting to see how well she holds air, or not.0
