Video Panorama of Bodrum, Turkey

<A href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WskT_hfr0rA ?>"Bodrum, Turkey Panorama"</A>

Taken at the site of a former lookout tower along a 3rd century defensive wall. The water you see early in the video is not Bodrum bay; it is an inlet immediately north. The most distant mountains beyond the water near the beginning and end of the movie are islands; the one at the start in the Aegean Sea, at the end the Mediterranean as they officially meet in Bodrum Bay.

The ancient wall and one remaining gate are immediately outside the resort property and the land is protected from development forming the largest "green area" in the city proper.

A couple pics of the castle and the bay follow.

The only remains of the tower are underground--deep stone-lined open pits.

Bodrum bay is over the mansion-covered hill you see about 20 seconds in. It is round with a well defined mouth. Directly opposite the mouth is a central projection with a Christian era castle. From the original tower, the castle would have been in view.

  • Great report

Thanks Mike, for such an informative report. It is obvious that there is a high degree of wealth concentrated in that area. Those are some magnificent sailing vessels! It appears that several of the buildings have solar arrays on rooftops. Did you see that to be commonplace?

They all have solar panels & rooftop tanks; presumably for DHW...

You can see a closeup at another post titled "Turkish Solar"

The wooden ships are unique to the Bodrum area and are gathering for the annual yacht race the last week of October. The first pic shows ships entering the harbor through the traffic lane in direct line between the harbor's mouth and the castle.

The Samarkand pictured is especially beautiful with carefully selected ribbon mahogany timbers and most definitely among the highest value I saw moored. The wheel was scrumptious. The chrome was liquid and every time I saw over a week, a young deck hand was cleaning somewhere...

This pic is looking from the castle and shows the docks on the west side of the bay. The arrow points to my location for the movie on the high point of the first ridge at the edge of the ancient city. The entire valley between the first and second (higher) but steeper ridge line was in view. In ancient times, I suspect that the second ridge was kept completely clear to offer the best possible silhouette of large-scale movement.
