2-stage gas valve for steam
i would like to know what choices are out there for hi-low atmospheric burner control for my 1,050,000 btu boiler.my present valve is 1 1/4 in. i see that gerry gill favors the maxitrol but honeywell make some too.
any thoughts on one make over the other? i realise that the valve is only part of the arrangement the other being the vaporstats.did i hear that there is a choice there as well beyond honeywell-maybe one which could incorporate the 2 vaporstats in one control? --nbc0 -
Valves, gas
Hi guys--
I've recently used the Honeywell V8944N1020 two stage regulating gas valve in the 1-1/4" size. It worked out very nicely. Controlled by Vaporstat. Put it on an old JB series Weil McLain steamer.
If you want slow opening, you could consider the V8944B1027.
On the other hand, I like Gerry's solution but have not yet tried it. I just got that V8944 series gas valve in my head since I've two staged so many W-M LGB boilers which utilize this valve in its stock form. They use it to modulate the hot water version of the LGB, but not the Steam. Go Figure.
My guess is that W-M figures staging a steamer can't be done mindlessly the way a hot water boiler can. You need to adjust the low fire so that the steam won't contract so much that areas of the building go cold even though the boiler is firing. From the manufacturer's perspective, maybe it looks like nothing but a headache.
