Resonating hum when new system runs

We have a brand new Smith G8 six section boiler fired with a Carlin EZ gas burner. Our plumber is aces and the install and near boiler piping job is immaculate. The boiler room is located below the living room. Two new 2" black pipe risers tie into the existing 4 inch drop header, still in the ceiling, original to the 1936 construction. The drop header feeds a 3 inch main. (The old Ideal boiler had two 4 inch risers.) I'm thinking something got jostled and moved when the old risers were removed / new risers connected When the new system runs there's a very annoying hum/resonance in the living room directly over the boiler room. When I stand on the living room floor directly over the boiler the sound - a hm/drone - disappears. I weigh 180 pounds. I don't feel the floor flexing, but the difference in the sound is huge. The plumber agreed to come back and hear for himself. There is no resonance or hum in the boiler room, only upstairs. Any thoughts??

Move the couch to where you are standing when the sound goes away?

I might question combustion setup as this can cause a low

resonating sound if combustion off. Just a thought. Tim

Possibly might be some burner noise coming up the gas piping if it is fastened to the floor. Slight vibration from burner coming up pipe might require isolation hangar. Have had similar situation with oil in the past.

The flue vent damper on my boiler makes a hum when the boiler is off, but still warm. When it cools off, the hum goes away . . . been like this for years. If your damper is doing this, it might be transferring the noise to the joist.

  • **** Charland, you had it right. The black pipe gas line was vibrating. It was strapped tightly to a short plank attached to the ceiling. Plumber removed strap and isolated gas line, wrapped the contact area with a heavy vinyl material. Nice going ****!
