Fresh Water Makeup

Ideally, zero but to be realistic, every vent may give forth a whisp of vapor before it actually closes, so over time that is where it would go under operation.
Naturally, you have to make up the water when you blow down the LWCO and during any skimming and cleaning of course.
Other sources of leaks are buried mains and any boiler leaks above the waterline. Any automatic water feeder should have, in my opinion, a non-resettable counter on it so that you can record both your planned and unplanned make-up.
Otherwise, if automatic fill, you could be masking a leak.

Fresh Water Makeup
What is the rule of thumb for fresh water makeup on a residential one-pipe steam system? I can access all the piping and the only potential leak I found was a loose packing nut on a radiator supply valve. I tightened it and am now waiting to see if my level of makeup decreases. Generally speaking though, what is the normal amount of makeup?0
