radiator nipples

100 year old cast iron radiators, trying to add TRV's. Does anyone have a trick to get the old nipples out when the inner spud nipples just snap off. Most are 1.5" size pipes.

I cut the nut off with a buzz grinder, insert my spud wrench, and use a pipe wrench. The spud wrench stops the brass tailpiece from collapsing and you can usually get enough torque to get it to spin out...also spray on some pipe-break free stuff...

BTW, my mom is from Mitchellville and my uncle owns Vignovich trucking out of Madrid...lots of IA ties...

Rad nipples
Also if nipples break off or wrench won't do it, cut a small pie shaped piece out with a sawzall and very fine tooth blade. Take out piece and rest can be extracted with a hammer and chisel.Careful not to cut into the radiator threads. Good luck.0 -
Easiest way as I have done many times.0
