Is IGSHPA the only source for good geo training?

    Geothermal training

    Ray,
There are a lot of good sources for training. Many distributors and manufacturers offer training on their equipment. Some offer loop/application training. There are also other independent organizations like Heat Spring. With the new tax credits for geothermal, I think that you'll see a lot more training available. Depending upon where you are located, the popularity of geothermal will dictate how much training there is in your area. You might have to travel if you're in one of those areas where it's not popular yet. Let me know where you're located, and I can make some suggestions.

    Favorite brands for geothermal

    Lil-roc,
I'm a little biased, since we manufacturer GeoComfort and Hydron Module brands. However, ClimateMaster, FHP, and WaterFurnace are good choices, too.

    geo

    Jeff,
I took the HeatSpring installer course but the course did not discuss water to water geo in depth. I'm in southeast NY between NY city and Albany.

    Geothermal training

    Ray,
This is certainly one of the weak areas of any geothermal training program out there right now. We're continuing to add more and more water-to-water information to our classes, but almost all classes offered today concentrate on water-to-air. The eventual goal for our company is to have a separate training module on geothermal hydronics. There are a lot of opinions on how to do it right, so it's not one of those classes that can be put together quickly. We're shooting for more in-depth training on water-to-water applications in 2009.

Not many if any organizations/manufacturers cover water to water/hydronic installations in great detail if at all, I believe its a huge sore spot in the industry, all of the severely botched geo installations i've seen have been water to water.

I like Climate Master for water to water, they are simple and easy to control while still having powerful compressor logic/protection systems. also i'm pretty excited about their new line of hi temperature units with built in reset/staging controls. I don't like Wter Furnace wtw units for the converse reasons, they are very cramped and overly complex in their control/wiring execution and are prone to doing very strange things like switching into cooling for no reason (yes, I had all the jumpers in the right spots, even the tech guys are baffled by it.)

if you run your high voltage wiring in close proximity to your low voltage wiring and there's a lot of electronics involved the HV will induce ghost current in your LV circuit and cause all kinds of crazy things to happen. Whenever crazy stuff happens with fancy electronic doodads that's the first thing I suspect.

meanwhile, if Waterfurnace gives you the cold shoulder, and they might, try Econar. Then, of course, there's always the Robur's air to water and water to water HPs. Check them out! www.robur.com if I'm not mistaken. But be perpared for a surprise or two! ;)
