tie small zones together, another boiler sounds like over kill for a control problem. or add a buffer tank.

Friend of mine,
Put a Vitogas 050 in his new house, 200,000 BTUH input. He's a sheetmetal guy but took it upon himself to do the whole thing including choose and purchase the boiler as he has access to the supplier. All in all, being very anal retentive, he did a pretty good job. Nice neat work although he pumped to instead of away. Anyhoo he's finding that it's too big most of the time. The final fix is for me to put in a Prestige one size lower but for now I was wondering if it would be ok to pull the spuds from both opposite end burners and plug the manifold. I know I've seen this done with other products before but I figured I'd run it by you folks and see who says what about the idea. He's got a number of hydroair zones and a couple HW zones. Most of the time only one zone runs and the boiler shortcycles big time, plus, it's costing him a fortune. The math says each burner is 40,000 BTUH input so I'd be cutting it down to 120,000 btuh input. What do we think?0 -
Buffer
If the system is microzoned and causing short cycling a buffer tank is a great idea. Look at eh one from turbomax or HTP.
Messing around with the burner may cause warranty issues. I wouldnt recomend it.0 -
Right,
I figured there might be a good reason for not doing that. It was just an idea that crossed my mind for a stopgap measure until we yank it and put the Prestige in. Yes, he wants to pull the V and put in the P. He wants more efficiency than what the Vitogas gives him. Would a buffer tank still be a good idea with the Prestige? I was figuring the modulating aspect would handle the varying load by itself. I'm new to the Prestige. Does it require a certain amount of constant circulation like, for example, the Munchkin does? Actually, I think I'll go looking for that answer on their site.0 -
Hoo boy...
Looking at what they have diagrammed and knowing what he has makes it look tricky. The problem being he did an old fashioned pump to with the expansion tank on the supply side and not a pump away as they show in the diagrams. I THINK it might work anyways but this requires a call straight to TT and probably a diagram of the existing piping config to see what they say about it. wish the **** he had called and talked to me before he put all this in. Thanks guys!0 -
Talked to TT...
Not a problem with the pmup to vs pump away, just connect supply to return and close tee the boiler in. Piece o' cake. He even has both sides valved off so no draining/refilling the system. Just thought I'd pass that along.0 -
Don't mention Viessmann and FIRE in the same sentence
The Vitodens is a ticking time bomb. Run for your lives0 -
LOL...
It's not a Vitodens 200 thank God! Juuuust kidding Viessmann people.0
