A Major Upgrade in Technology - Darin Cook

This old GE downfire served this home well for decades. I was enthralled with the old GE circulator with the motor hanging vertically below the piping. It had a massive oil pot on it. Cool!!! It took me a day and a half just to get rid of the old GE war horse. LOTS of oxygen and acetylene cutting going on. I have looked like a chimney sweep gone bad! The system had a ancient Honeywell tstat as well, still in operation.
I put a wye strainer with a 1/4 turn boiler drain ( to make it easy to clean) on the return to take out any goodies that may work itself back to the boiler in this old of a system. I put the zone valves out by the original zone take offs. I have a Wilo Eco moving the system fluid as well a Wilo Star 16 moving the indirect fluid. I moved my pump panel away from the foundation wall which was very crumbly and that allowed me to hide my wiring behind the wall. I have been using pvc drum traps as my condensate neutralizer with marble chips in them.
My customers are tickled pink with the results. great folks to work for. Coffee and bagels waiting for us every morning. They were also happy with the fact that I came right over with an electric water heater when the old GE girl wouldn't run anymore and make them hot water. This electric tank came out of another GB customers house last year and I have used it in three different customers houses for temporary hot water. Nice! It was meant for my camp but has not made it there yet. Maybe someday.

Great Contractors
attract great clients, Darin! You took care of them as you do all of your customers and they knew that. Good for all of you.
As with a lot of your projects, out with the old (really old!) and in with the new, you are saving a lot of money for a lot of people. It would be wonderful to see the before and after fuel bills- I bet many would share as it is now something to brag about in a way.
From such projects come other projects, done with pride and without compromise because you would not do it any other way.
Thanks for letting me admire from afar, Darin!

Nice job Darin,
Is the pvc drum trap an off the shelf item? Who manufactures it? Do you think there is enough marble chip in there to do the job?0 -
A fool is a working man who thinks his best interests are shared by the likes of the republican party.
Wake up, the wealth has already been stolen- consolidated at the top were it's always been.
In recent years the ginned up money of our imagined economy has trickled down quite effectively to enterprising working class people like joe. Those days are over and we need leaders who can face our future with integrity.
This joe is voting for change.

Hey Scott
A fool is someone who belives its all the Goverments fault.
Take out an equity line in your house ?
Max out your credit cards ?
Buy a house your really could'nt afford ?
We ALL get a little blame for this mess.
We have met the enemy and he is us !!

BEAUTY JOB DUDE!
I guarantee that the stairs to the basement would NOT have held if you tried to yank that beast out in one piece.
Great job!!

Had to
Reinforce/rebuild/remove more than one set of steps to get those out. Ever lay hands on an old Harvey Whipple?0 -
GB install
Nice job.0 -
Joe the plumber is
a registered Republican and UNLICENSED to work in Toledo.
We should not insult Darin.
;-}0 -
Sooooooooooooo neat.
What is the black box under the GB?0 -
Never a Harvey Whipple
but I worked for many years in the Schenectady, NY area. Home of GE. I worked for a salesman that pulled one of those beasts out of a basement with his 4 wheel drive vehicle. Darn near took out the foundation and did manage to rip a door frame out.
Cutting one of those up was no cake walk either.
Boy do I miss doing that.................NOT!0 -
\"Joe\"
My "Joe the Plumber" comment was not meant as a slight against Darin nor was it a political statement.I have the utmost respect for Darin, as a tradesmen and a person.Again, very nice work.

I have been buying the pvc drum traps at a local supplier. I don't recall who makes it. Charlotte? I have checked the effluent condensate with a ph tester and it about a spot-on 7. I like the drum trap in comparison to some condensate neutralizers available through the boiler manufacturers because the fluid will actually sit in instead of just passing through it allowing a much greater contact time.

The black box is actually the primary/secondary pump module. It assures proper flow/delta T across the boiler.

The ole girl had to be cut. Not for me to get it out but my clean-up guys. I don't haul ANYTHING out of a basement anymore. I call 1-800-GOT-JUNK. They take whatever you want out. Metal, cardboard, firebrick, vermiculite, you name it. They show up in uniforms, new truck, are insured, and they send YOUNG backs! It saves my back and allows me to retain mission focus - install the new system. Believe me it is very business smart! It saves me HOURS of time. Which makes their charge cheap.

Thanks Guys
I appreciate all of the kind words. It is always nice to have other skilled professionals give you a thumbs up. Dobber- No offense taken Bud. I have pretty thick skin - probably from having most of it burned while cutting up the old GE!!!!!
