old floors

I have an older home from the 1800s. The wood floors are original 4 inch planks with no subfloor beneath. I would like to install radiant beneath them. I am afraid of damaging the floors because I would like to keep them, they already expand and contract with the seasons. One contractor said he wouldn't do it because he thought it would damage the floors, another said it would be ok with outdoor reset? I am confused.

No worry's
There is nothing to worry about with radiant under new flooring and seasoned flooring is even better. Your floor temperatures will be much lower than the with sun shining on the floor. Not sure what outdoor reset does for the floor because at design temperature the floor temperature will be the same. Not that it's not a good thing, it's a great thing as is constant circulation but these have little to do with your floors. If your haven't built up the insulation and tightened up the envelope, you should. Not only to save energy but to lower the temps required from the floor.0
