Removing a section from a boiler

Anybody have any tricks that worked to remove a section on an oversized boiler. I was thinking of using a wedge at the push nipples or possibly distroying the section that I plan to remove if it won't budge. I could crack the flange part where the push nipple was and cut from the inside of the nipple where it goes into the good sections. all ideas welcome. thanks

Tom, V9s are easy, Remove jacket and flue collector on boiler.`

Disconnect piping, remove tie bolts, take small steel chisel and put on collar at edge of push nipple and tap not real hard between sections to be separated and this will start to separate sections, do this little by little at all three push nipple locations and it will be free of nipples then you can just slide rest of way off. You will need to have new nipples 2 bottom and 1 top nipple to reassemble along with sealing rope for combustion side and nipple lube. Depending on vintage of boiler, you may also have to rent the hydraulic press to press together. The boilers appx 10 yrs old and older were pressed together then bolted. The newer versions use the tie bolts to pull them together. Good luck PS, don't forget these sections are heavy, be careful.

Ya know.. if you want to downsize it.. You can adjust the manifold pressure.. I'm not familiar with the boiler that you mentioned but generally lowering the pressure lowers the BTU output.. just watch for condensing..

You can only adjust input as low as the minimum air flow is on

burner. Otherwise you will be way too lean and start causing incomplete combustion or high CO or both. Also you have to move enough air through boiler which also limits how far you can go with it.

  • Not a good idea to

reduce pressure you are asking for trouble.

I usually put a pipe wrench on them and give a gentle twist to

break free. Remember, you always use new ones so don't need to save.
