Mouat System - Hammering Pipes
Steamhead (in transit)

That your wet return(s) have become clogged with sludge.
The operation of a new boiler and bigger vents tends to circulate steam at a much higher rate, and that can wash sludge out of the system that has lain undisturbed for decades.
You may need to flush out your returns.

Mouat System - Hammering Pipes
I recently replaced the original boiler installed in my 1924 home which has a 2-pipe Mouat system. The main line vent and return vents were also replaced at this time which dramatically improved the operation of all the radiators on one half of my home (no surprise).
However, several weeks after installation, I began experiencing a hammering (end of cycle) that never occurred before with vibrations coming from the end of the return line, near the vent, on the previously dormant side of the house. While flushing the boiler this weekend seemed to resolve the issue, with dropping temperatures I'm now getting hammering throughout the cycle, again on the previously dormant return line.
I don't think it's the pitch of the return lines as this has never been a problem in the past. Also, the system ran for weeks after installation, including extremely cold periods with no hammering noticed. I'm trying to understand why this problem would start so suddenly and am eliminate what sounds like a crew of people banging on the lines in the basement of my home.
Could it have to do with the size of the main line vents that were installed? Any advice would be greatly apprecaited.0 -
moat
check your pressure. moat systems are extremely sensitive to pressures in excess of a few ounces. do you have a good low-pressure gauge, and if so what is your pressure?
the pigtail on the vaporstat may have become plugged recently, allowing your pressure to get out of control.
do a search using the button in the orange banner above for moat, and you may find a thread with a similar situation.--nbc0 -
I believe the vaporstat was set at around 8 pounds.0 -
I Hope you mean
8 oz./in2 and not 8 psi!
