tracking down main vents...

1 pipe steam job i am on is a u shaped complex (32 units), all connected. boiler sits on far end of complex. I have not seen the basements of the middle or opposite wing. Mains just leave the boiler room. Would dead men typically have left accesses to the vents through access doors? I have no idea what i will find, but figure there must be a typical installation practice for this.

Should be after the last radiator on each main. Most install them on a tee before it dropps down into a wet return . There should be a access but must carpenters I found just box them in with their work. There was an error rendering this rich post.

at the tops of the last risers, venting the mains at the top floor separately from the last radiator.
We have an abundance of such apartments in Boston like that, U-shaped, 3-story, 1920's construction. Guessing similar construction and systems to what you have.
On more than one occasion, I have found the vent low within a closet, usually atop a 2-inch stub-up pipe with a bushing.
Almost universally someone has capped this because the vent leaked and sprayed steam over Mrs. Levinson's fur coat. The system suffers, none more than Mrs. Levinson. Such a nice coat too.0
