  • Mixed steam system question - need help!!!

Just moved into an old brownstone (1874). It has a steam system with "new" burnham v8 oil boiler- 10 radiators on 3 floors. We have Dan's book - on loving your steam - which is very helpful. We want to put TRV's on the individual radiators with remote set back thermostats on some as the rooms are not used much. The issue I am encountering is that it appears some of our radiators are two pipe, some were two pipe and clearly changed to one pipe (capped second pipe stub coming up through floor), and others look as if they could have always been one pipe. The kicker is that all of them have air vents that only one pipe systems would need.

On the one hand - the system runs fairly quiet and the issues we have I think are fairly straight forward to remedy, but I want to put in the TRVs and am not sure if I should treat this as a one pipe, mixed or two pipe system.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Re: mix system steam, you may want to post where you are

located and someone on the wall here will let you know a good steam person in your area. I don't think pics will be enough to identify what type of system you have. It may be worth having a pro come by and give you information so you can complete your retrofit properly. Just a thought. You could start with pics of basement piping w/ tags on pics showing what they are and how they are pitched although. Tim

    Assuming the 2-pipe rads

never vented air into the return connection but always had vents on them, the one-pipe TRV can be used on all rads on that system.
