We fired up another G-8 steamer today (Gordo & Steamhead)

The piping work looks good and the system should perform well for the folks. Good job.
I have a question on the exhaust venting. Is that an atmospheric hot water heater that you have tied in to the flue piping? It would be wise to see how fast the water heater can establish draft with the power gun running on the boiler. I have found alot of common vented appliances over the years that dump alot of products of combustion into the basement till that chimney gets warmed up. It has the possibility to be deadly under the right circumstances.

This is getting to be a habit
Here we have a 4-section Smith G-8 that ran for the first time today. It replaced a rotted-out Burnham atmospheric, which we think was killed by long-standing leaks. Gordo has the "before" pics of this job and will post them when he can.
This is a one-pipe system with recessed convectors. Most of the convector shutoff valves are located in the basement, right above the steam mains.
On this one, we pre-fabbed the header using 2-1/2-inch rather than the minimum specified 2-inch, and attached it to the mains before the boiler was delivered. We made it as high as we could, allowing for a taller-than-normal riser. Dry steam!
You'll notice the flange on the burner isn't the usual. EZ-Gas burners have been in rather short supply, but we have an excellent Carlin rep, Bruce Graham, who got us a workable unit. The combustion test numbers were terrific. Of course we'll change to the G-8-specific air tube when it becomes available.

I agree with Darin.
Beautiful job.
I understand the concerns about the venting.
Perhaps a second penetration would be better?

The gas power
burner does not establish any pressure difference in the flue as it does not pressurize the vent. The venting is all negative just like any natural draft boiler with a natural draft water heater. The venting is fine as it is.
If you are having problems with that happening on gas power conversion burners then something else is wrong.
Get some training on these applications along with other related venting issues and all those concerns will go away.0 -
Thanks, Tim
But tell me, why then does a powered burner need a barometric? Wouldn't a natural-draft-type diverter serve the purpose?

Yes a diverter
would be fine except if I had my way all gas equipment would have barometrics. The barometric allows for adjustment of draft while the diverter is fixed and that can cause problems especially when doing a conversion from oil to gas.We have to still use a double swing on gas which is different from oil. None of that however has to do with problems that may occur with fan assisted equipment vented together with natural draft equipment as that is another problem and power gas conversion burners do not cause that problem.
In reality the draft hood disconnects the equipment from the vent and also allows products of combustion back into the space. Draft hoods really came about because of pilots and the need to have draft control on the low end of the combustion spectrum.0 -
And in case anyone's wondering
we did make sure both units drafted properly.
