Question for the gurus.

Which brand and why?

Will be part of my steam system.

    indirects

I like the tank in tank style ( Phase III and Weil). No coils to worry about and they make a ton of hot water, especially hooked to a steam boiler. Hundreds installed in the last 12 years or so with no issues.

    ditto...

I have used a SSU-$5 before and it would plug on occation. Not fun having a boiler steam in May.
  • Is the Phase 3

approved for use with steam systems ? I agree the tank in tank design would be less prone to sludge buildup than a coil indirect .

    Question?

I always liked the concept of tank in tank for having low pressure drops, lots of surface area and limited scale build-up potential.

The only down-sides I have heard are that draining is a chore, requiring a siphon was suggested. Also when filling initially, one had to mind to fill the domestic side first (or was it the other way around?) to avoid straining the tank to tank welds.

I have been a "default fan" of the coil types (SuperStors with CuNi tubes for example), maybe just because that is what was available short of a gas-fired heater or a Boiler Mate.

So, I am asking, are the down-sides I mentioned out of proportion to my concerns? I want to specify a Smart at some point and like the TT line. Thoughts?

    Thanks
