and have a good air separator routing the air back into the tank, it won't waterlog. I think I remember Dan writing in one of his books that he still has a plain steel tank, set up as I describe, and it never waterlogs- what say ye, Dan?

steel compression tanks
I have read almost all of Dan's books, but I'm still trying to comprehend the water logged tank. In "Pumping Away", it states that only two things can add water to the tank. The feed valve and heat.
Let me give an example of what I found today which is typical of the boiler's that I find installed in my area.
Single story Church with a 60's era boiler. Three circulators on the return. Fill valve on the return. Steel compression tank on the supply with a boiler drain and Airtrol tank fitting. No air separator and the tank is full of water.0 -
Vodoo hydronics
Some things are a mystery and beyond explanation. The actual physics of a hydronic system are complicated and the interactions between the x-tank and the boiler and connected load are dynamic.
In my experience, a steel expansion tank without a diaphragm will become waterlogged every 10 years.0
