..I know can get into just about anywhere. Although, I have not seen any of them knawing on any pex at any camps that we've installed. I wouldn't put it past them, with the vermon(sp?)anything's possible.

    pex and rodents

wondering if any one has had bad experences with pex or pex al pex in relationship to areas where they may or may not be sharing the same space ,case being a retro fit where the under ground duct system (cedar shingles with tar paper encased in cement and dirt )would be used as a chase for pex runs to the heat emmitters .There was enough critter evedence to say that there been some rodent presents and they probalby have excellent access from so many places that sealing it all up would be quite challenging if not inpossible, would the pex be in danger of being chewed through ? i do remenber reading some thing about rats and mice being more drawn to pex al pex then reg barrier pex and cannot remenber if they where more apt to chew heating lines over domestic water due to the noise generated by the moving water thanks clammy

  • No actual experience but,,,

previous conversation here on the subject gave me the impression that as long as it's not preventing them from getting to where they want to go they will most likely not bother it. However if they make the discovery that there is water in there that may induce them to chew on it. The thought was you should leave a little room for them at penetrations so they don't have to chew it to get through. personally, I'd also schedule regular exterminator visits to make sure they don't begin to thrive on the property. I also like to leave a preventative box of d-con out for them in the mechanical room or where they are most likely to be found hanging out.

Thanks MFP and Ross ,the sealing of penterations i believe would be impossible being that the original down flow oil fired furnaces have supply ducts that are just the space between the slab and the dirt and as for the river rats i think they have dug themselve a few entrances into the supply pluem where there no access ,this is a real hero job and i'm waiting to hear back from them the house was put on a archtenical histroist register of some sorts and there tight with the money who ain't and the systems that are there real don't do much except cycyle on limits due to the beautiful non existing duct work and burn alot of oil ,i had advised them to go and get an electrician and add some rectables and buy some space heaters as the cheapest way out ,when they asked about my labor rates they nearly passed out and i am cheap compared to the normal HVAC rates in my area but like most of the jobs i look at every body whats the best but are thinking of 1980 prices ,this would be very challenging and imagative project but may be out of there budget so i quess they'll freeze peace and good luck clammy PS i 'll be posting more stupid question but no more job pics or insight into any thing else no hard feelings i think i learned a few more things durning my absents
