Help I need to replace Hydropulse boiler

Boilers and furnaces are two different appliances. Boilers heat water and furnaces heat air. Boilers are more expensive and labor intensive to install.

    Replacement of Hydropulse boiler

I have been taking est for replacement of my Hydropulse 100 boiler. I have been trying to replace it for 3 years now because the previous homeowner located it in a cubby hole in our living room. It is annoyingly loud when we are in there watching tv. I need something that fits in the exact footprint and is direct vent. I have had several est for 11,000 and a couple of guys just looked turned around and went home. I am not spending 11 thousand dollars to replace this boiler. I don't have that kind of money. I don't have a basement its a crawlspace and at least one of the estimates have been for a muncking in the crawlspace but for 12 grand. Can anyone please help me find something quiet and reasonable.

And it took you this long, why?

    :)

Rather than delve into price (ist Verboten heir), I can only suggest that any number of Mod-Con boilers are available to fit in tight spaces. Regardless of how one defines "tight" (my "tight" is Ron Jr.'s "Olympic Bird's Nest Stadium") :) you still have to maintain the manufacturer's and code-required clearances.

The guys who looked and turned around may be telling you something. You may have to find another location and perhaps express-run the main piping to the closet for distribution.

    Safety first.

If it was easy, you would have done it. It is no fun exposing yourself to the dust & fibers found in old homes, and it is really no fun sweating copper and working hard in a crawlspace. You have to take some responsibility for this based on the house you bought. You can move the boiler entirely to a main floor location, or depending on your location, an outside wall-mount unit. Some recess in a stud space on the outside. Do you think that everyone who has looked at it, be it walking away or bidding what you deem high, is wrong? That is NOT an unreasonable estimate, even for an open basement with plenty of room...

I was a first time homeowner when i purchased the home and it was spring time as well. Did not know the heat was so loud. If
I knew then I would have negotiated a new boiler. I find it hard to believe a boiler designed 20 years ago has such a small footprint that nothing else will fit in its space. does technology only advance in electronics these days. My co-workers have had furnaces replaced in larger homes and used top of the line gear and only paid 6k so telling me 11 grand is not a bad price. You surely are joking.

Thank you for the input nevertheless

    No pricing here

Brad was trying to tell you that pricing is "Verboten" or also in plain English forbidden on this site.
But not we are not kidding; we are all professionals in the Heating industry( or the most of us are).So just like anything : you get what you pay for .

By the Way as far as i understand the Boiler you have is still Available...

Soooo.... If you want to go cheap (and actually even these boilers are not cheap) and do not mind loosing sleep due to the noise of this boiler than how about just swapping it out?

I suggest that you call Three or four Heating contractors:

Just listen to them do not talk or have a opinion! because YOU do not understand!

    Take these Three Estimates

Now you can ask about how many units they have installed and if they have spare parts for these boilers on the service trucks and ask for some reverences Check with the BBB, and then make a educated decision which one you are going to start a Business relationship with.

sorry for being so but that is just the way the cookie crumbles! Richard from Heatmeister. :)

This is not just a "swap" based on your description. Removal? Should that be free? Any Asbestos? How will it be piped? How is it piped now? Surely I am joking??? You came here for help, and it is being given. Again, the persons you called, and everyone here who is telling you that is NOT an unreasonable price is seen as wrong in your book??? When some hack proposes a bad install that he cannot even explain how it works or why he did it, will you believe him because he is half the price?

    Much Respect

I did come on this site looking for help. The help I was looking for is someone with the experience of replacing a hydropulse in a tight space. I realize now that you all are a band of brothers that stick together. I can respect that but I don't need someone telling me that I am not being overcharged. I am looking for something that will work as a swap in the current footprint. Hydopulse has been discontinued in April of 2007. I am sure i can find a exact replacement but then who knows how long the parts will be availible. Plus I can't take that Noise. I don't want to offend anyone and thank you all for your help but I am sure there is something out there that will work as a swap. If anyone knows what that is please HELP!!!!

ANY hot water boiler (properly sized) will work, and these boilers come in MANY shapes & sizes, including wall mount. You should look at Laars boilers (copper-fin type) as they are very small for the BTUs they put out, but need to be installed as per their piping diagrams. (manuals available online) The price thing can be seen as sticking together, but SHOULD be seen as several professionals giving you the SAME opinion others already have....take it or leave it, but do not insult my pricing advise...apparently I would not be doing this install for you either if I lived near you.

    Andy

As we are getting into the heating season you have to realize that some contractors are busy and some are very picky. I stopped installing Pulses in the late eighties as they had too many callbacks due to noise etc.

There are many options today and I am sure you did not come here for a lecture. Derheatmeister gave you very good advice and perhaps if you give your location others will join the conversation.

It is better to be pro-active (as you are trying to do) instead of reactive after a breakdown or failure. Every now and then you can take these posts wrong and think they are bashing the homeowner. For the most part that is not what this site is all about. We do not discuss price as it is prohibited by our host and no one can give you an accurate quote without looking at the field conditions.

Hope you find a reputable installer at a fair price!

    System 2000

Andy, you did not give the dimensions of the space available. I would contact Energy Kinetics and look at a System 2000. It is available with direct vent and direct exhaust to the outside. It makes almost no noise when fitted with the outside air cover. It is a small profile, high quality piece of equipment. Ask the company for a "Premier Dealer" in your area. Here is the link:
