Engineers vs. Architects (Dan H.)

As a builder/hydronic installer, I sometimes get in early on the mech room size discussions. In many blueprints, there are NO mech rooms. "You can have part of this closet under the stairs". More often than not, I'm able to persuade the designer/homeowner/architect, that what they don't need is 200 more sq. ft of storage, but an area that is worthy of the equipment necessary to heat/cool/ create hot water etc. It's really amusing to watch the expressions on thier faces change as they realize the importance of the mech room. In fairness to architects, most of them do try to create a space in the design, it's just usually too small.

In my area...
...I wouldn't understand the conversation or at least need a Rosetta on a particular "dialect". And yes , the math is correct , the intent is often missed.0 -
Architects....
Residentially, the best way to deal with them, is to get them out of the "loop"as soon as possible.
Tell the HOMEOWNER... the space that we (installers and comfort providers for their biggest investment) need...and let THEM fight with the designers.
As MY space gets smaller....the bid goes out the window, as it takes FAR more time to RE-THINK a job when the architect makes the dreaded "changes", than as it was given to me initially.
You have to stand up for yourself. If the changes effect clearances and codes, learn to say NO! Designers are just that. They THINK they know what we're dealing with, but truth be told...don't have a flipping clue!
Very funny way to teach this, but I think I'll save a copy to have in case I need to use some levity to instill MY point. Thanks Dan. Chris
