Co dect replacement

Is it possible the one in the kitchen is the only one working. Was it going off while you were there or at night. Was the house aired out before you came? If they had an oil fired appliance common vented with a gas appliance they have probably been getting low level CO poisoning for years. What detector did you use to check the space?

    CO dect replacement

Wondering about how many years are most run of the mill (H D )style Co dectores are good for ,i have acustermer who's CO unit in the kitchen was going off ( no pilot lites either on any kitchen appliances )mean while the basement unit and 2nd floor bed units did not sound off ,i went through the whole house with a combustion any and found no signs CO or CO2 ,i had checked the chimmey which was clear there was some intinal spill over from the hot water heaters draft hood but only about 30 to 45 seconds until draft was estiablished draft was .03 on the flue and there is a fresh air duct for combustion air ,the hot water heater is about 10 years old and will soon be replaced with a indirect working off a oil fired boiler and yes they do share a coomon chimmey for about 50years thanks for any info peace and good luck clammy

the CO dector is about 6 years old and i checked the rest of the home using a e instrument combustion anz. ,the gas company had also checked the home and venting of the hot water heater and boiler and stated that the venting was fine and that the minor roll out from the draft divertor was well below normal and that the alarming dector should be replaced with a better model that has adigital read out .As for airing out the home they really did not have all the doors and windows open as when they called me and i arrived was only about 4 to 5 minutes,i have returned a few times in the past 2 days and found no CO reading in the home .i have reccommened for them to replace the dectores with a least 2 newer one one for the kitchen and another for the bed room ,there is also a 2 year unit in the basement located near the hot water heater and boiler ,thanks for your input peace and good luck clammy

Never met anyone from a gas company that knew how to test any appliance for proper venting. That can only be done with a combustion analyzer in the flue and checking O2 & CO readings.

If a dectector keeps going off no matter what it could be defective. Don't see anything here that shows proper testing was done to verify there is no problem. Most problems are intermittent but the symptoms of problems are easily detected but not by measuring space CO.

    May also be

other compounds in the air. I posted a question on that recently when I was spraying Tiger Foam in my ceiling perimeter. Apparently the propellant (isobutane I am just guessing), reacts as positive with the sensor.

Other posters told me that other hydrocarbons will similarly give a positive.

The detector may still be defective, I do not know, but interesting to note that other things may be picked up.

I wonder if there are CO detectors at Cheech and Chong's place? :)

Hey Clammy! Glad you see your name again. Hope all is well. I missed you.

Thanks for the reply ,as of today it seems all is fine ,the service guy from the gas company did have a combustion anz and did check the gas water heater for spill over and draft as did i before they arrived ,i did n't see the brand tester he was using but i am using a e instrument group unit model 2000 which was recently calb, there was no trace of ambient Co near the dector that was alarming nor through out the home either ,thanks for the replies ,peace and good luck clammy
