1st off, make sure someone has set combustion on boiler and have someone check you reset curve on computer control. 2nd, work on tightening up the envelope of the house. i.e. make sure doors and windows are tight with little to no air infiltration. If possible, make sure walls, floors and ceiling is insulated. Maybe have a blower door test done on building after you do all visible items you can to see where else infiltration may be. Making the house a tighter envelop will benefit you from reduced drafts and energy useage. Good luck, Tim

cast iron boiler age verses efficiency

Does anyone have any documentation showing efficiency drop as a cast iron boiler hot water boiler ages? i.e. factors such as scale and sludge affect the boiler/systems' efficiency. A client has a 40 year old boiler and another contractor has him believing his old boiler is operating at 50% efficiency verses the bonnet nameplate rating of 80%. The owner belives he will see his cost of operations drop by replacing the boiler with a new 80% cast iron boiler.

I replaced an old cast iron boiler last year with a supposedly 93% efficient boiler.My old boiler was a 528,000 BTU unit and was replaced witha Weil-McClane 310 boiler.All the numbers were run and they said a 270,000 BTU boiler would suffice.I elected to go with a larger boiler due to putting a water heater on at a later date.My problem is after the first year my natural gas usage was exactly the same as previous years with the old system So much for being efficient!My question is what can I do to reduce my gas usage.Thanks for any feed back.
