Wood/Coal insert or a new hearth with both?

I have the room so I'm wondering what the best option would be. I'd like to have the option to have three kinds of fuel. (Gas steam boiler with rads and a wood stove with a coal kit) I could leave the fireplace as it is for looks and get a hearth installed somewhere in the middle of the house with piping to get better draw. The chimney is at the far end of the house. There is a chimney large enough for the water heater on the other end. Could a stove be tied into that exiting chimney? What do MA codes say about this? I'm not doing this one by myself of course. When the power goes I'd like the security with the new child and all in the dead of winter. Any thoughts?
