Surge column

Could someone send me a picture or drawing of what a surge column looks like?
We just had two Weil Mclain 1088 boilers installed and the contractor used an 8" header as spec but reduced to 6" at the take off to the system. He also welded a 2 1/2" boss for the equalizer leg right below the steam takeoff . I am thinking with the reduction in size the steam velocity is increasing and causing a low pressure right above the equalizer takeoff. The water line is all over the place and I know we will not be able to get the contractor to re-pipe it. I think a surge column may at least cut down on the low water cutoff alarms from the bouncing water line. When the burner shuts off the water line drops about 6 -8" in the guage glass withing 20 sec. Thanks for any help.

That could be the reason... but
oil on top of the boiler water can also cause this. Have you skimmed the boilers yet?

Thanks for the reply.
I have been skimming the boilers for a couple of days now but there is still oil in the water. I'll keep skimming an hopefully that will solve most of the problem.0
