Gorton mains leaking

A few years ago I replaced the old Hoffmans with Gorton 1s. Last year one of them started leaking late in the season. Now they both leak, one slightly and one about half a tea kettle's worth. They are both on 8" risers. Aside from outright replacement, is there anything I can do to fix and/or prevent this?

thanks,
jim

    yes

Try boiling them in a pot of water and vinegar. Sometimes that gets them clean again.

I went down today to do this and noticed they weren't leaking from the vent hole, but from where the front cover is pressed onto the housing, at 6:00. If I blow into them while covering the vent hole air spews from the cover seam.

Has anyone else seen this from the no. 1s? Did they have a bad batch?

    Possibly

but was there any banging in the system? That can tear steel apart, not to mention brass.....

Hmmm...in past heating seasons I would hear occasional banging, maybe once or twice per cycle, but I couldn't tell if it was inside the pipes, inside a radiator, or just a radiator expanding and the feet snagging on the floor. I did a bunch of corrections at once (re-pitched rads, gliders under feet, rebuilt risers & header) so I can't determine what eliminated the noise.

I did measure the mains pitch and they're fine.

Since I have 2 broken vents and no one else has piped up in accordance, I'll suck it up to my system being the culprit and swap them out.
