but this was only the second time I saw this happen
The power of vacuum....DEEP vacuum. Mad Dog0 -
Yep
Twice had it happen. Some people pull the drain / vent assembly out and you have to break a union or a waste on a stop to break the vacuum. You try to drain the tank just a little so you don't make a mess.
Hear the sound once and never forget it.

Stuff occurs....
The worst tell tale....when it couldn't be pulled from the ceiling because of all the pipes we put in the way of removing it.
I use it as a reminder....but not thinking WAS the reason it happened. Mea Culpa. JCA0 -
How'd it happen ?
Was the system being drained by pump ? Sometimes we forget to give the system some air and we get a good vacuum going , but the Teel pump usually slows down or stops before something as dramatic as that happens . Yikes !0 -
Heres a picture of a similar incident, but on a much larger scale.
apparently they steam cleaned the tanker and immediately closed the valves0 -
hey Brad, I'm deaf...
Wanna tell me about vaccum?0 -
What?

Nobody has answered ron Jrs question
What makes that happen. Being a new person to the heating world, I don't get involved with many tanks like that.
Concerned minds want to know.

same principle?
So is that the same thing that happened to the hot water tank?
-emptied while hot and closed up
-air cools, conrtacts and CRUNCH!0 -
People forget...
...about that 14.7 psi being on both sides of things. We're sitting under miles of air. Remove the pressure from one side of a container and %*&! Boil a little water in a can with a screw cap. Tighten the cap and run under cold water to speedily condense the steam inside. It's no fun when it happens to your motorcycle gas tank, but at least it's a good demonstration of physics...
