Mouat Vapor system questions
I have a Mouat Vapor system that was installed about 1925. The builder lived in the home and everything he did was first class. Unfortunately, the next owner was not. While he installed a natural gas American Standard boiler in 1975, he also replaced the main floor Mouat radiator valves with something cheap, added a few radiator air vents, and boosted the operating pressure to 2 psi. He also put in a very undersized cast iron baseboard unit in the new, larger kitchen. The next owner insulated the attic and installed storm windows. I've replaced the wet return and Hartford loop because of leaking and added some wall insulation. With probably too much introduction, here are my questions:
1. I am planning to replace the main air vent. I am thinking of the Hoffman 75. Is this unit too big? Can a main vent be too big?
2. Am I likely to run into zny heating problems if I replace the Pressuretol with a Vaportrol at, say 8 oz, and leave the rest of the system as is for a season or two.
3. Do thermostatic radiator valves work well with Mouat Vapor systems?
4. Would a new, stylish (and properly sized) European radiator for the kitchen play nicely with the cast iron Peerless radiators in the rest of the house?
Many thanks,

1. If this is the only vent in the system, the #75 is too small. The biggest vent out there is a Gorton #2, and that's what I'd use. If there are no vents on the steam mains, I'd add properly-sized vents tere too.
2. The Vaporstat is a no-brainer. Mouats were designed to run on 3 ounces or so (right, Gerry?).
3. I don't see why not. But the best place for them is in rooms you want to keep cooler, such as bedrooms.
4. No. These are made of pressed steel, which doesn't have the thermal mass of cast-iron. That Euro-radiator would go cold the instant the steam shut off, and the kitchen would be uncomfortable.
Many different styles of cast-iron radiators are out there. Get one you like and that will deliver enough heat.

you are correct Frank..
i just got the original blue prints and specs from a Mouat system put in at the Pepper Pike country club..it states to run the pressure at no more than 5 ounces at the boiler and states to set the relief valve for 9 ounces..and the place is bigger than a house..we have a mansion running on one ounce with a Mouat two pipe system..
