Fuses?!!!
We were doing this AC change-out earlier this week. This is what we found in the disconnect. Hey, at least they didn't blow anymore! -DF

My guess is that
the cost of copper was low that week Or the PEX kept melting.0 -
Are those...
K, L or M fuses? Guess it's a good thing they don't make DWV in 1/2" eh...
Some peoples kids...

They solved that problem! Reminds me of a furnace replacement we did where somebody had wired the circuit for the furnace off the top lugs in the fuse panel - completely unfused circuit. A good reason to never short two wires to find the circuit breaker / fuse.0 -
Should have seen
The 480v. 3-phase 225 amp busway fuse plug that blew in one of my buildings.0 -
Electrician
We had a former electrician that worked for us as an apprentice. She tried a "repair" like that on a unit she was working on, claimed "they did it like that all the time" at the electrical contractor she used to work for. She's no longer works for us.
Scary
BTW Dan, I really enjoyed getting to meet you and your guys at Rex in Chicago. Hope you had a great time and a nice trip home. Rich L0 -
Special fuses
They are XSB fuses (Xtra Slow Blow) fuses.
They will blow out promptly,,, after you building has burned to the ground and is a smoldering pile of rubble.0 -
Rich
Likewise, Rich - it was nice to meet you as well. Hope we cross paths soon. -DF

I would
I would be more worry about a lack of ground then thos fuses. Then again, I guess one could pray that the emt is the ground.0 -
Look Familiar?
Sad but true!0 -
I see those for the neutral all the time, and have seen the ground run across a terminal of a 3-phase disconnect that was used on a 240 V application.
TimJust a guy running some pipes.0 -
Not all disconnects require fuses. If the upstream has fuses then a
local disconnect without fuses can be used. In some cases there is fused
disconnect at each end of the cable and it is quite common to see this
type of arrangement. Instead of replacing the disconnect they just put
in buss bars. They should label this arrangement on the outside so that
people know. Paul0 -
fuses
Did the tech reach in with his pliers and rotate those XSB fuses so he could the UL label on the back side?0
