I was at a project yesterday
that is going to be a passive solar dwelling. The basement and first floor have radiant floors in the thermal mass concrete slabs but the 2nd floor heating and cooling is undecided. They are planning on depending on thermal mass and ventilation for the cooling season but would like some back up A/C in the upstairs bedrooms for extreme days. I thought a ductless split heat pumps would be perfect since the 2nd floor will be heavily influence by the 1st floor in the heating season and would only need a little heat now and then. Same with the cooling season. They don't need much since the walls are insulated by straw bales to the tune of R-24, and the ceiling will be R 48. Here's the problem...The community is an Eco village that does not allow outside condensing units. Everything is geo thermal or solar. Even though the duictlees outdoor units are practically silent the HOA code state no outside units. Any brain storms out there???

Short sighted
Sounds kinda short sighted on the part of the HOA Wayne. You gan get a mini split HP rated up to 21 SEER (Fujitsu), thats pretty green.
You could use a small water to air GSHP but as well as the house is insulated even the smallest would likely cover the load of the entire house. Plus it would be a sizeable expense for a small need.

Window Shaker? ACK!
I was thinking maybe putting the condensing units in a well ventilated room in the basement that was closed off from the main house. Maybe a ventilation fan for air transfer. Hardly green though. WW

Or just put duct in and out of a ductless split condensing unit. No need for a room.0 -
ACK!
Love the response! I didn't say it was a good idea, just an idea!
What about: http://movincool.com/portable-air-conditioner/cm12.php
It's a completely ducted remote mounted package AC only unit. I haven't used one yet but I spec'ed one for a very small communications room at a bank not too long ago.0 -
sounds like job for
Earth tubes.

Wow!
That's kinda neat. It's based on the same design as Thomas Jeffersons privy ventilation at Montecello. Really! Thanks for the ideas. WW
