dielectric?

I was told a long time ago that brass nipples (or couplings) would act as a "dieelectric break" when used to connect an indirect waterheater. Is there any truth that the brass is indeed some kind of break? I've recently seen some corrosion the causes my to wonder if there is any merit to using them. Any opinions, or even better, any documented proof?
thanks,
Marco
