gas gun in a v8
but I think it has to do with the fact that there was not a real demand for changing oil to gas when oil prices were lower than gas. No sense paying to have something tested that is not going to sell.
Now that there is a demand they may go that way.
The other reason they do not want them converted is the lack of ability to do so safely by a lot of installers. The boiler companies do not want the liability.

Converting the V8-4
Hi Wall!
Is it possible to install a gas gun into a Burnham V8-4.
If so, any recommendations as to brand? Does Burnham have a conversion gun of their own?
Thank You!
Billy
ps:Great site!0 -
Burnham does not
typically approve conversion of their boilers to a power gas burner from oil. That being said if you hire a professional who knows and understand installation of gas power burners and the requirements for same it can be done. You will however perhaps lose the warranty on the boiler. If you have a good contractor he may pick up and cover the warranty himself just depends.
There are several good power burners on the market today. This again will depend on your contractors preference.0 -
Tim:
Is the lack of approval by the boiler makers (except Smith) from their lack of interest in investing the money to test them with gas? (Which I can appreciate) A Smith steam boiler doesn't seem all that different than a WM SGO boiler: cast iron, pins, etc.
What is your opinion?

Approval
Burnham makes a boiler specific for gas. It has been said here many times the approval process is costly for the mfg so I would think they didn't bother testing the oil boiler already having a gas boiler. Secondly and it is strictly a guess on my part, the former KeySpan bought a lot of Burnhams for their free boiler to switch program so it may be a marketing thing. Gee I wonder where Keyspan got the money for the giveaways, rate payers maybe.

KEYSPAN = GOUGING
THATS A NO BRAINER . KEYSPAN SCREWS THEIR CUSTOMERS VERY THOROUGHLY. NO ONE COULD DO IT BETTER. PEOPLE ACTUALLY THINK THEY GOT A FREE BOILER. HOW NAIEVE0 -
Tim:
What happens if the boiler appears to have been cleaned before the conversion and in fact an area of the pins were not cleaned. Sometime pushing the brush is real hard and the installer gives up on area.
Does the natural gas interact with that material and corrode a hole in the cast iron?

Failure to properly clean
will result in an accumulation of a white flaky substance in the sections which I have heard called by old timers years ago as "fly ash". It insulates the boiler sections and drastically reduces heat transfer. It may also block the passages and create a Carbon Monoxide (sooting which also insulates) issue.I have never seen it do any damage as such to the boiler sections.
The acidic content of the natural gas and propane flue products tend to get deep into the porous cast iron and bring out all the residual oil deposits. It behoves all of us therefore to go back at least a year after conversion and do another cleaning.
This also happens often times in clay tile lined and unlined chimneys to the extent that "fly ash" is accumulated all the way up to the opening for the flue pipe into the chimney. Open up the clean out after a year and you will find all of this accumulated in the chimney.
Good cleaning can eliminate a lot of this.0
