the best boiler
I cannot help but wonder, am I better off with a new mod/con or a sturdy cast iron replacement. With the large 2" header in the basement feeding the large cast iron radiators, will the small mod/con be able to supply enough hot water on col days?0 -
Not only.....
Not only will it be able to do that, but it will love doing it....while achieving efficiencies that a cast iron boiler could only dream about.
Why pay to heat a large chunk of cast iron, when a smaller and smarter mod/con will do it....all the while saving you money and "sipping" fuel to keep it running? Chris0 -
The best boiler
is one that is sized correctly and installed by a professional with the correct tools to dial in the combustion.

Cost about double
The mod/con costs about twice the correct sized cast iron boiler, and I've been told it will only "live" about half as long as the cast iron. That having been said, is the cost efficiency truly worth the difference? Or have I been misinformed?0 -
cost
The cost is not double in many areas with utility rebates and the fact that you have to line the chimney to keep the cast iron boiler. considering that properly done they should be at least 20% more efficent than a non modulating boiler NOT selecting one is just foolish. Where else can you get that kind of tax free return on your money? Of course i'm assuming you don't live in Florida or something.0 -
the best boiler.........
is the one that is controled the best. In otherwords you can get the best and most $$$ boiler out there, and if not piped right and controled good, including outdoor reset and such, then you just wasted a lot more $$$$.
That said most mod-con boilers will have decent controls built into them, and most others won't. so they do not cost twice as much if you add the needed controls and do the more standard boiler right.
