RAISING STEAM RADIATORS

Easy to do. They tend to be quiet, well-behaved and do not require college. Much easier to raise than most children. :)
If you want to change their heights though, do not cut the legs. They are hollow in many cases.
(I have seen them broken off and the legs look like a cast iron tooth with the root canal disappearing down into the leg.)
The lower portions of the radiator castings tend to be hollow and lower than the tappings by an inch or so in order to collect the rust that forms during steam cycles. They are hollow not by accident.
I would take out the riser nipple and replace it with one of the proper length and to adjust, find old Bakelite checkers or sometimes old height cups made for the purpose are available.
