OK to install a used steam boiler?

Sure if you got it, use it. But you're crazy to buy it off the guy. Give him what a scrap yard would give him, nothing more.
Just reuse the block and burner tray. If the jacket is still good (not bent in or rusted) you can use that too. Otherwise exactly what the last dude said is right on. Replace every control and check every plug tap for rust so that you don't get any surprises down the line. Good money saver.

Is it OK to install a used steam boiler?
A relative of mine has a used Burnham IN-6 boiler in his garage that he would like to get rid of. According to info on the boiler, it was manufactured in 1991. The boiler was actually used for 1-2 years and then removed, for reasons having nothing to do with the boiler itself. It has been sitting in the garage for at least six years. The boiler belongs to my relative's friend, who will sell the boiler for a few hundred dollars. I have calculated my house's EDR, and the boiler is the correct size. Should I buy the boiler and have a pro install it? I understand that there wouldn't be any warranties, etc. on the boiler. But, would it be ok after sitting for so long? Thanks!0 -
Safety first
Firstly, I would not trust any of the controls, and would buy all new, strip it down. New controls and safeties are essential.
Next I would pressure test it to make sure it has not cracked. Stored with some water in the bottom? Who knows if it froze, cracked and leaked out? The boiler is rated for 15 PSI and you could test it to 30 with air yet operate it in under a pound in service.
Would I ever advise a client to do this? No. But for myself, this is what I would do.0
